What Happens During an Ear Candle Therapy Session?

In this post I’d like to walk you through a typical Ear Candle Therapy session – whether done at home or by a professional practitioner.

By familiarising yourself with the process and understanding what to expect this should help you get the most out of your Ear Candling Experience.

Initial Consultation

When you visit a practitioner for an Ear Candle Therapy appointment you will be called in for a consultation. Here you will discuss what you hope to achieve through the treatment, as well as your medical history, making sure that it is safe for you to proceed.

Likewise, if you are planning to use Ear Candles at home, it is important that you understand the counter-indications. Although Ear Candling is safe and non-invasive there are a number of conditions that make it unwise to continue.

These include:

  • Ear Infections
  • Perforated Ear Drum
  • Recent Ear Surgery
  • Implants in the Ear

Once you have established that Ear Candling is safe for you, you may want to plan a treatment schedule. A practitioner will be able to advise on this, but it is also possible to come up with a treatment plan yourself.

Depending on a few factors – your age, condition, and length of time you’ve had the condition – you can figure out how many treatments you should have to combat the problem and get the best results.

Many people feel instant relief after just one treatment. But if you are hoping to treat symptoms of longer-lasting conditions, such as tinnitus, or chronic ailments like migraines, you may need more regular sessions.

Getting Comfortable

Relaxation is a big part of Ear Candle Therapy.

Practitioners will get you to lie on a massage table, they may play some relaxing music and use essential oils to help create a relaxing, aromatic environment.

You can easily recreate this atmosphere when Ear Candling at home.

It is recommended that you take a warm bath or shower (or sit in a steam room) before beginning the treatment. This will help to relax you, as well as prepare your ears for the warmth of the candle.

Unless you have your own massage table to hand, you will need to find somewhere suitable to lie comfortably on your side. A sofa or bed is perfect, providing you can support your neck so that it is not strained or crooked.

During the Treatment

Whether you are using Ear Candles yourself, or visiting a professional, your experience during the treatment should be very similar.

When using Ear Candles at home, it is a good idea to have somebody with you to help. They will be able to place and remove the candle for you, making sure it remains in position throughout the treatment. It is also best to have someone watching over you for health and safety reasons.

If you are confident enough to use your ear candles alone, you should keep a hand mirror beside you for a clear view of what you are doing at all times.

The candle is placed gently about ¼ inches into you ear and held at 90 degrees to keep it vertical. This ensures wax drips into the ear canal, and not around the ear.

A protective disk is used to help protect your face and eyes from ash and smoke.

Shortly after the candle is lit you are likely to hear a popping or crackling sound. This is just the candle burning down. You may also feel the warm, massaging sensation within the ear, as warm air is drawn up through the hollow candle.

A Hopi Ear Candle takes 10-12 minutes to burn down to the “safety line”, approximately 2-3 inches above the protective disk. If you are Ear Candling at home, now is the time to remove the candle and extinguish it in a glass of water.

Many people feel an immediate release of pressure when the candle is removed. This can help relieve congestion, headaches, and itching as well as improve blood circulation.

Now the other side

Once your first ear has been treated you will turn over to treat the other ear.

Even if you are only suffering with problems with one ear, it is always best to treat both in a single session.

You will need to be careful as you move – do so slowly and gently – as your balance may have been temporarily effected by the candle.

Take a moment

Once both ears have been treated you should take a moment to relax.

If you are visiting a practitioner you are likely to be offered a massage of the head, ear and face, or even of the hands.

If you are Ear Candling at home it is good practice to massage your own ears and temples a little to help stimulate lymphatic drainage and enhance the effects of the candling. If you have someone with you, perhaps they can help!

Most people report an overall feeling of calm and wellbeing following Ear Candle Therapy. So, lie comfortably and relax for 10-15 minutes to soak this in.

Wax Removal

A lot of people believe, that Ear Candles remove ear wax by having it stick to the molten beeswax candle like glue, allowing it to be pulled in chunks out of the ear.

This is not the case.

In fact, Ear Candles use the chimney effect to gently massage and heat the inner ear, softening wax and debris so that it can be drawn towards the surface of the ear and extracted manually.

Following the treatment, the final stage is to manually remove wax from the ears. This can be done using a damp cotton wool ball, or your own, clean, little finger. Some practitioners use a specialist ear scoop.

It is never recommended to use Q-tips to clean out your ears. They are too thin and you risk damaging your eardrum and causing a nasty infection.

The effects of Ear Candling can last several hours, drawing wax up through the ear canal for 24-48 hours after the treatment. So, whether you did it yourself at home or visited a practitioner, you may want to keep some cotton wool handy for a few hours to regularly swab your ears.
