How does Ear Candling compare with other common ear treatments?

Hopi Ear Candles have been used to treat physical and mental ailments for thousands of years. Today, the practice is more popular than ever.

More and more people are turning to Ear Candles to help with all kinds of conditions in the ears, nose and throat. The most common problem tackled by Ear Candles is blocked ears.

But in these modern times there are plenty of other medical treatments, prescriptions and procedures for combating these issues.

So, what makes Hopi Ear Candling such a great option?

I thought I’d take a look and compare Hopi Ear Candle treatment to some of the other common ear treatments available.

Hopefully, this will give you some insight into Hopi Ear Candling, and help you decide if it is right for you.

Treating Blocked Ears

Ear wax is a naturally occurring secretion in our ears that protects from bacteria, foreign objects and infection. It serves as a lubricant for the inner ear and, in most cases, clears itself naturally.

Some people have a tendency to over produce ear wax. This can be due to particularly narrow ear canals, excess ear hair, a current medical condition or pre-existing genetic factors.

Over-production of ear wax can create an unpleasant, compacted sensation in the ear. This can cause headaches, itchiness and even temporary hearing loss.

Ear Drops

Many people turn automatically to over-the-counter ear drops to help with a blocked or itchy ear, particularly for children. Ear drops are well marketed and readily available.

If you suspect you have an ear infection, ear drops can be very useful as many contain antibiotics that can clear up the infection quickly.

(Always speak to your doctor if you think you have an ear infection).

However, using antibiotic ear drops when there is no infection is not recommended. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance which is not helpful to anyone.

The other problem with medicated ear drops is that they can be quite harsh. If you suffer from sensitive skin, eczema or psoriasis, these drops may cause an adverse reaction.

Sodium bicarbonate ear drops are often promoted as “softening” but many people find them quite drying.

Ear Candles, on the other hand, are infused with a number of natural herbs and minerals which improve the effectiveness of the treatment but are not allowed to drop into the ear.

By treating the ear without inserting chemicals deep inside the ear canal, Ear Candles offer a non-invasive treatment that is suitable even for those with the most sensitive skin.

Syringing

Ear Irrigation, more commonly known as Syringing, is a medical procedure commonly prescribed to people suffering with compacted ear wax.

It involves spraying jets of water into the ear to flush out excess wax and debris.

This can offer a fast and effective solution to compacted ear wax and many people find the treatment durable.

However, by jetting water into the ear you risk putting pressure on the ear drum. In severe cases, the water can also force wax deeper into the ear.

All this puts the ear drum at greater risk of rupturing. If water then gets past the ear drum, into the inner ear, you risk bacterial infection which can lead to painful inflammation and hearing loss.

In contrast, Hopi Ear Candling puts no pressure at all on the inner ear or ear drum.

The candle is inserted no further into the ear than your finger can reach, just 1cm / ¼ inches. The warmth and rising air inside the burning candle then gentle softens the wax and eases it to the surface, allowing it to be removed carefully.

Microsuction

Microsuction is a relatively new procedure that more and more doctors are recommending as an alternative to syringing.

Microsuction involves the use of a microscope that looks deep into the ear, as a medical suction device is used to accurately suck out the compacted wax.

Generally, this procedure is considered very safe and effective.

So how does it compare to Ear Candling?

Very few doctors will be able to offer microsuction at their own premises, so you might find yourself at the end of a long waiting list at a specialist clinic to get this treatment.

Ear Candling on the other hand, is safe and easy to do yourself at home.

Admittedly, microsuction might be more effective (in some cases) at removing stubborn ear wax than Ear Candles. However, that is all it does.

No only does Ear Candling tackle compacted ear wax, it can also help with other issues.

  • It can ease congestion in the nose and throat if wax is the result of a cold or the flu.
  • It can sooth ear pain and headaches caused by the pressure of blocked ears
  • It can also relieve the symptoms of chronic ear conditions like Tinnitus…

Treating Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition in which a permanent ringing or buzzing can be heard deep within the ear. This can be caused various possible factors including exposure to too much loud music, or pre-existing medical conditions.

Some tinnitus suffers have complained that their symptoms increased after Syringing, due to the extra pressure exerted on the ear drum. Likewise, microsuction is able to remove wax and sediment, but has no effect on the symptoms of the conditions.

Whereas, Hopi Ear Candling can be a great help to suffers of Tinnitus. The gentle movement of air within the candle and ear canal serve to massage the ear drum. This stimulates blood circulation and regulates pressure. Often this is all that is required for the symptoms of Tinnitus to vanish.

Antihistamines

In cases where blocked ears and congestion are caused by allergies, most people turn automatically to antihistamines.

Histamine is the chemical responsible for the majority of allergy symptoms people experience. It sticks to sensitive receptors on the cells in your ears, nose and throat, causing them to swell and become irritable. Antihistamines block histamine and stop it having this effect.

The problem with antihistamines is that they do not always work for everyone. Sometimes the antihistamine is not strong enough, other times it has no effect at all. It all depends on the specific allergens involved.

For allergy sufferers, an itchy inner ear can be a serious thing. It can affect their mental heath and happiness just as much as their physical health.

Hopi Ear Candling can tackle the itchy ear symptom – instead of, or alongside, antihistamines – by extracting allergens and other irritating sediment from the ear canal.

If done regularly, this treatment can prevent itchy ear symptoms from ever occurring. A relief to any hay fever sufferer with a picnic to attend!

Overall, Hopi Ear Candling offers a safe, non-invasive, effective solution to issues caused by and causing blocked ears. It is certainly a treatment worth considering if you have had no success with other options available.
